Ryoo Su Jung becomes second recurve archer after Park Sung-Hyun to receive 1400 pin

Korea’s Ryoo Su Jung has officially become the second recurve archer in history to shoot 1400 points for the 1440 Round (formerly called the FITA).

The score was recorded at the Korean President’s Challenge tournament held in Gwangju in July 2019. It has now been officially recognised and Su Jung will receive an exclusive purple 1400 pin.

“At the moment I knew I shot 1400, I could not believe it. I was so bewildered,” she said. “It was a precious experience as an archer and I was absolutely delighted.”

Su Jung shot 346 at 70 metres, 351 at 60 metres, 347 at 50 metres and 356 at 30 metres.

She said that keeping focused at the shortest distance was exceptionally challenging and that her focus was on controlling her mind until the end of the round.

The only other recurve archer to shoot 1400 is legendary Korean woman Park-Sung Hyun. Having won individual and team gold at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Park shot a world record of 1405 in the October later that same year.

She is widely recognised as one of the greatest archers of all time.

New badge holder Su Jung, now 25, also currently holds the world record for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round. She scored 595 points at the Macau Indoor Archery Open in December 2018. She has represented Korea as a student athlete but is yet to make her debut for the senior team.

“My goal as an archer is to become an Olympic medallist,” she said. “I’m in the process of getting there.”

World Archery provides score pin badges to national federations that administrate their own reward programme. The 1350 and 1400 badges are only available directly from World Archery on individual request and with proof of score.
