IM pushed all the way by ELDER as VAN LAMOEN is eliminated

Robert ELDER (FIJ) missed the chance to record the biggest shock of the men's individual elimination rounds when he lost 6-4 to KIM Bubmin (KOR) at Lord's Cricket Ground on Tuesday. There was an upset in the women's individual 1/32 elimination round when Kristine ESEBUA (GEO) recorded a 6-0 win against former world champion Denisse VAN LAMOEN (CHI). Men's Individual ELDER (photo) who finished 2nd from bottom in the ranking round, pushed No. 2 seed KIM (KOR) all the way before being beaten 6-4. ELDER has the biggest bow at the Games, measuring 1.83m (72in) to fit his 1.94m (6ft 4in) frame and he put it to good use, particularly in the third set when he scored 10-9-10. ELDER even had a chance to win the match. Needing a 10, he aborted his shot, raised his bow again and went to shoot with only six seconds left. He did not have enough time and could only score a 6, giving KIM a lifeline. The Korean knocked out Tarundeep RAI (IND) in the next round. Baard NESTENG, ranked No. 57 in the world, beat world No. 26 Hideki KIKUCHI (JPN) in a shoot-off in the 1/32 elimination round and showed it was no fluke by beating Jacob WUKIE (USA) in the 1/16 elimination. WUKIE, silver team medallist, had looked in top form during his straight-sets win over Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) in the 1/32 elimination round, shooting six 10s out of his nine arrows but he fell to the in-form NESTENG. It has been a miserable Games for India so far. A flu-type virus affected most of the team when they arrived in London and TALUKDAR revealed that the fever had weakened them for the ranking round. He, RAI and Rahul BANJEREE, are all out. Michele FRANGILLI (ITA), star of the men's gold medal team, could not find the magic touch in the individual event and lost 7-3 to Dmytro HRACHOV (UKR) in the 1/32 elimination round. It looked as if the drama of the team event had drained FRANGILLI and he failed to get going. Women's Individual VAN LAMOEN was a surprise world champion in 2011 but the most memorable moment of her Olympic Games will be carrying the flag at the Opening Ceremony. She lost 6-0 to ESEBUA (GEO) in the 1/32 elimination. Berengere SCHUH (FRA) won the last match of the day, by 1mm, in a shoot-off with LIN Chia-En (TPE). It was so close that the judges had to measure the two arrows twice to check who would progress into the next round, a rare necessity. SCHUH had earlier beaten Kaori KAWANAKA (JPN) 6-2, closing with a perfect end of 30. British pair Naomi FOLKARD and Alison WILLIAMSON did not reach the 1/8 elimination round even with enthusiastic crowd support. FOLKARD lost 6-2 to Mariana AVITIA (MEX) while Bishindee URANTUNGALAG (MGL) won 7-3. Maureen TUIMALEALIIFANO (SAM) goes back to her job in a bank after she lost 6-0 to LEE Sung Jin (KOR). TUIMALEALIIFANO only switched to the recurve bow at the start of 2012 and was delighted just to be competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Source: ONS Edited by World Archery Communication
