Korea's men look for first individual gold medal

Korea will be hoping to claim their first men's individual Olympic gold medal in archery when the event concludes at Lord's Cricket Ground on Friday. They will be wary, however, of the outsiders who have eliminated some of the biggest names.   Larry GODFREY (GBR), seeded No. 4, thrived in front of his home crowd as he sailed through the first two rounds against Md Emdadul Haque MILON (BAN) and Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX) 6-0 and 7-1. He faces Khairul Anuar MOHAMAD (MAS), the last Malaysian competitor remaining.   Baard NESTENG (NOR) is a surprise entrant in the 1/8 elimination round after beating Hideki KIKUCHI (JPN) and team silver medallist Jacob WUKIE (USA). NESTENG will be hoping to knock out Tahaharu FURUKAWA (JPN), who is ranked 5th.   Markiyan IVASHKO (UKR) and KUO Cheng-Wei (TPE) meet, having been handed favourable draws when their opponents in the 1/16 elimination round knocked out highly ranked players. IVASHKO beat Nay MYO AUNG (MYA), who eliminated Romain GIROUILLE (FRA), while KUO beat Ahmed EL-NEMR (EGY), who had disposed of Crispin DUENAS (CAN).   European champion Rick VAN DER VEN (NED) has lost only one set in the competition but comes up against ranking round world record holder IM Dong Hyun (KOR).   Third-ranked OH Jin Hyek (KOR) performed well to remove in-form Luis ALVAREZ (MEX) in the 1/16 elimination round and is rewarded with a tie against Rafal DOBROWOLSKI (POL), who has won both his matches, against Daniel REZENDE XAVIER (BRA) and Rahul BANERJEE (IND) 7-3.   Viktor RUBAN (UKR), the gold medallist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, seems to have found form again after struggling to 43rd in the ranking round. He meets Gael PREVOST (FRA), who ranked 6th, and beat teammate Thomas FAUCHERON (FRA) in the 1/16 elimination round.   Taylor WORTH (AUS) performed exceptionally to beat world No. 1 Brady ELLISON (USA) for the third time in his career. No. 7 seed DAI Xiaoxiang (CHN) will be WORTH'S opponent.   Dan OLARU (MDA), a 15-year-old schoolboy, faces No. 2 seed KIM Bubmin (KOR), who almost suffered a shock exit when Robert ELDER (FIJ) had an arrow to beat him in the 1/32 elimination round.   Source: ONS Edited by World Archery Communication
