BROWN double Paralympic Champion!

The big favourite, defending Paralympic champion and two times world champion, felt the pressure on her shoulder but came through. Danielle BROWN defeated her teammate Mel CLARKE in the final for a gold-silver British finish! The women shot their individual medal matches at the archery competition of the London 2012 Paralympic Games today! The Compound Women Open athlete took the field this afternoon: the two British athletes Danielle BROWN and Mel CLARKE and the two Russians Marina LYZHNIKOVA and Stepanida ARTAKHINOVA! Every individual archery match at the London 2012 Paralympic Games is the best of 5 sets of 3 arrows. There are 2 points per set to be earned. The first archer to 6 six set points wins the match! If the regulation number of sets (5) ends at 5-5 set points, there is a one-arrow only shoot-off, closest to centre wins! Here some commentaries from the field! Compound Women Open The crowd was roaring at the beginning of the afternoon session for the entrance of the No. 1 seed and defending Paralympic Champion Danielle BROWN from G-B-R!!! BROWN started her match well with 27 points in the first set, while the No. 4 seed LYZHNIKOVA had a problem with her second arrow and scored a "Miss". Then both athletes shared the second and third set, 28-28, 26-26. BROWN led 4-2. Both athletes started the fourth set with a 9. Then the Russian pretty much lost her chances with a 7. BROWN powered in a 10! Both athletes finished with a 9 and the first British athlete of the afternoon was in the gold final! The second semifinal was the second dual between Great Britain and Russia, and in some ways, the question was wether it would be the last one. The No. 3 seed CLARKE had the best start with a 10 compared to the 7 of the No. 2 seed ARTAKHINOVA. The Russian followed with two 10s, but the British athlete had enough with 8-10 to win the set! ARTAKHINOVA scored 9-9-9 in the second set. Pretty good but CLARKE had 9-10-9 to take a 4-0 lead! ARTAKHINOVA opened the third set with a 9. CLARKE scored 9. The Russian got another 9. The Britton shot a 10! ARTAKHINOVA finished with an 8. CLARKE shot an 8! Set score 27-26 for CLARKED and she got hersefl in the final and an All-British gold medal match! The bronze medal match was therefore a 100% Russian match. The No. 2 seed ARTAKHINOVA was the favourite since she won three medals, including the individual silver, at the last world championships. However, it is LYZHNIKOVA who had the best start: 9-10-10 to 10-9-9. Like every set so far this afternoon, ARTAKHINOVA had to shoot the first arrow. She shot a 9. LYZHNIKOVA had a 10! It was however reversed with their second arrows and both athletes finished the set with a 9. Tied set 28-28, LYZHNIKOVA led 3-1. ARTAKHINOVA opened the third set with another 9. So did her teammate. Then ARTAKHINOVA got a 10 and a 9. LYZHNIKOVA finished with 9-8, letting the set go. The match was tied at 3-3! Well—ARTAKHINOVA opened the fourth set in a familiar fashion with a 9! LYZHNIKOVA had a 10! ARTAKHINOVA scored another 9. LYZHNIKOVA left the “yellow” for the second time with an 8. ARTAKHINOVA finished the set with 10, while LYZHNIKOVA had 9. The 2011 world silver medallist finally took the lead, 5-3. LYZHNIKOVA opened the fifth set with a 9. ARTAKHINOVA got a superb 10 close to the bull’s eye! Then both archers shot a 9. LYZHNIKOVA could not put enough pressure with her last arrow, a 7. ARTAKHINOVA finished with a 10 to win the bronze medal, 7-3! Both athletes received the warm applause and a first standing ovation from the British crowd! Then came THE final for Great Britain! BROWN versus CLARKE. In the first set, CLARKE needed a 10 to tie the set. And she did. In the second set, she needed again a 10. And she did. So far this afternoon her third arrows had been simply brilliant. The first two sets were therefore tied (27-27, 29-29) and the match at 2-2. In the third set, CLARKE needed a 10 to tie. This time however, she scored a 9. BROWN took the set (27-26) and the lead in the match, 4-2. CLARKE had now to shoot first. She started with a 10. BROWN had an 8. Mel scored another 10! Dani had a 9. CLARKE needed a 9 to clinch the set and she did (a 9)! BROWN finished with a 9 but lost the set 28-29. Match tied at 4-4 going to the decisive set! BROWN started the fifth set with a 9. CLARKE had a 10! Dani scored another 9. Mel shot an 8. Tied score—one arrow to go! BROWN finished with a 9. Once again, CLARKE needed to come through with her third arrow. A 10 would win the match! CLARKE seemed to aim calmly but… shot a 7 this time. She won silver! After 2008, BROWN is the double individual Paralympic champion in Compound Women Open! The Recurve Men and Women team events take place tomorrow as of the quarterfinals. In the men’s 1/8 elminations today, Chinese Taipei beat Ukraine 194-183 and Turkey defeated Malaysia 197-190.
