7 records set at 2019 World Archery Youth Championships in Madrid

The 2019 World Archery Youth Championships in Madrid, Spain were the largest in the history of the event.

Nearly 600 athletes from more than 60 countries competed across the under-21 junior and under-18 age groups. And during the course of the championships, there were seven world records broken.

1) 1365/1440 – recurve cadet mixed team ranking round

Korea took top seeds in the recurve cadet men’s and mixed team qualification events in Madrid. Kim Je Deok’s 697 points topped the individual ranking round and when paired with Yeom Hyejeong’s 668, Korea broke the mixed team record.

Chinese Taipei’s 1352 was also above the previous world-best mark of 1346.

2) 2091/2160 – compound cadet men’s team ranking round

Tore Bjarnarson, Mathias Fullerton and Christoffer Berg shot their first world record of the week over the 50-metre ranking round. The Danish cadets were led by 16-year-old Fullerton, who was the only compound cadet archer at the championships to hit 700 points in qualification. Berg scored 699, Bjarnarson 692.

Their combined total of 2091 points was four more than the previous world-leading mark set by the USA at the worlds two years ago in Rosario.

3) 236/240 – compound cadet men’s team match

Bjarnson, Fullerton and Berg broke a second record when they scored 236 points against India in their first team elimination match.

Arriving in Madrid, the 24-arrow 50-metre compound cadet men’s team matchplay record was 235. Denmark went on to finish second in the championships to the USA.

4) 1387/1440 – compound cadet mixed team ranking round

Fullerton had a third record in Madrid. His leading qualification score combined with 15-year-old Natacha Stutz’s 687 is to be ratified as a new compound cadet mixed team world best at 1387.

The record had never previously been claimed.

5) 159/160 – compound cadet mixed team match

Mexico won compound cadet mixed team gold thanks to Sebastian Garcia and Dafne Quintero. The pair beat Makenzie Weatherspoon and Cole Zeug of the USA, 154-152, in the final. Garcia and Dafne shot a world record 159-point match in their semifinal against Australia.

Sebastian Garcia also became Mexico’s first outdoor individual world champion after beating Daniil Kosenkov of Russia, 146-142, to compound cadet men’s gold.

6) 229/240 – compound cadet women team match

Thailand set a new world best for the compound cadet women’s team match with 229 points in the first elimination round against Spain on 21 August.

The old record dated from Yankton in 2015, when Mexico shot 228.

7) 234/240 – compound cadet women team match

Thailand held that record for just one day in Madrid, as the Mexican compound cadet women – Quintero, Ana Sofia Hernandez and Mariana Bernal – reclaimed it by shooting 234 points in a quarterfinal match against India on 22 August.

Norway

Top-ranked man Anders Faugstad and seventh-seeded woman Sunniva Lislevand from Norway totalled 1395 out of a possible 1440 points to match the compound junior mixed team world record. That score was only set recently at the European Grand Prix in Romania, Bucharest, in June.

Faugstad, the runner-up of the 2019 World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch, also shot a perfect 150-point match to win the compound junior men’s world title in Madrid.

Faugstad’s 4Xs were not enough, though, to beat the world record of 11Xs set by the USA’s David Houser back in 2014.

The Norwegian archer is the only third compound man this season (and fourth ever) to shoot a perfect televised finals match. Mike Schloesser and James Lutz did so at the Antalya stage of the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup.

The 2019 World Archery Youth Championships takes place on 19-25 August in Madrid, Spain.
