Two debut countries on course for Tokyo as continental Games part of qualification ends

Chad and Tunisia secured quota places for Tokyo 2020 at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco and are on course to make their debut in an Olympic archery competition next summer.

Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt also bagged spots in Rabat.

The tournament was the fifth of five continental Games to award quota places. It also acted as the championship part of the qualification process for Africa, meaning as the Games portion ends – the next phase is already underway.

Asia will hold the next qualifying event at its championships in November. Europe, Oceania and the Americas will follow in spring 2020.

About two-thirds of the spaces for Tokyo have now been awarded. Of the 53 that are still available, four will be given as universality invitations and six are reserved for the host country, Japan.

Per gender, one is available at the Oceania championships, three at each of the Americas and Asian championships and four at the European championships.

The remaining 21 will be distributed at the final world qualification tournament that is being held as part of the third stage of the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Berlin, Germany. Three men’s and women’s teams will take tickets – and, as it stands, there are three individual spots, too. (Two for men and one woman.)

Countries that have qualified for the Games must enter athletes that have achieved the minimum qualification score in recognised competition. The level is assessed over a 72-arrow 70-metre round and the minimum score is set at 640 points for men and 605 points for women.

Fifty-five countries competed in the archery competitions at London 2012 and 56 at Rio 2016. There are currently 31 nations with quota places secured for Tokyo 2020.
