Sportcal to produce 2nd event study in 2017

World Archery and Sportcal have agreed to work on an event study at the Mexico City 2017 World Archery Championships, making it the second event of its type in a succession to be analysed using GSI methodology, after the 2015 World Archery Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In 2015, a record 590 athletes from 92 nations attended the championships, in addition to 353 team officials – and the World Archery Congress, which immediately preceded the event, hosted 190 delegates. In total, overseas visitors to the championships contributed 13,300 bed nights and generated $3.3 million in direct economic impact.

For the World Archery Championships in 2017, Sportcal will analyse the six core event impact pillars – economic, media, social media, sponsorship, sporting and social – and look in detail at the tourism impact of the event.

World Archery Secretary General Tom Dielen said: “The first GSI study we participated in, back in 2015, gave us a comprehensive view of the positive impact of one of our major events, especially on the host city. It yielded tangible statistics to present to potential bid cities, and identified areas of opportunity in our event management. It will be exciting to see how we've developed over the two years inbetween these championships.”

Sportcal will work in collaboration with key stakeholders involved in staging the event, including World Archery; the event organiser and national federation; host city; sponsors; broadcasters and any third party organisations to gather, assimilate, analyse and compare the data and narrative around the event.

Mike Laflin, CEO and Founder of Sportcal and the GSI Project, stated: “We are delighted to be working with World Archery again on the study of the World Archery Championships in Mexico this year. The study in 2015 showed that the event generated significant economic and sporting impacts for the host city of Copenhagen. This has helped World Archery attract future host cities for its championships and guided them in the development of their events strategy.”

Sportcal, the world's leading provider of sports market intelligence, will conduct the study as part of the GSI Event Studies Programme which runs from 2017 through to 2020.
